Schmiede needs you!

It has been an amazing 10 years. So much has happened during our gatherings that I am sure we missed much, we might even have forgotten some. As we all know, Schmiede is an empty building without her Smiths and their work. So we call upon all our Smiths and visitors to send us your material.  Material which was produced at Schmiede but also material you strongly associate with Schmiede and if you got material about how you feel about Schmiede, that's great too. We want to know, collect and maybe some day present. Photos, videos, sound etc.... you are the limit.

DER GREIF is having his first jubilee on saturday, december 17th! The fifth issue of the magazine for photography and literature will increase – due to this ceremonial cause – its page numbers (now 100 pages) and its print run (2000 copies)! Once again terrific photographs and texts from different artists from all over the world, that converge in DER GREIF and are present that night to the world public! Fantastic! The holy halls of Import-Export will furthermore be transformed into the brain of a photography-magazine.

SPEAKER
IEPE (geb. 1974, Rotterdam) wohnt und lebt seit 1997 in Berlin. IEPE ist bekannt für seine Absperraktionen in Berlin und Tokyo, sowie die regnenden "Wunder-Bäume" in Singapur, Berlin und Arnsberg. Er ist überdies Erfinder der Hybridsportart Schachboxen und leitet den Chessboxing-Weltverband WCBO mit Clubs in Sibirien, London, Los Angeles und Berlin. IEPE ist Mitbegründer von Pecha Kucha Berlin. Im letzten Film von Tom Tykwer "Drei" bohrte er in Berlin nach Öl. Für die Aktion “Painting Reality” verwandelte IEPE gemeinsam mit der Anonymous Crew mittels 2000 Autos und 500 Liter umweltfreundlicher Farbe den Rosenthaler Platz, Berlin, in ein interaktives Kunstwerk.

Medienkunst und –kultur, Performances, Visuals, Videos und Audios, ein Feuerwerk der Phantasie, technisch perfekt umgesetzt – das war wieder die Werkschau des 9. MedienKulturFestivals Schmiede11 „chaos creates structure“ am Samstag, 24.9. auf der Pernerinsel in Hallein. Programmhighlights: die Präsentation des Siegerprojekts zum Salzburger Landespreis für Medienkunst 2010 „Years“ und natürlich der Performance Walk.

Am 24.9. öffnete die Schmiede11 zum letzten Mal die Tore der Alten Saline auf der Pernerinsel: Schauen – hören – erleben – über 200 Interessierte konnten sich ein Bild machen, wie vielfältig die 150 Smiths seit dem 15.9. ihre Kreativität im inspirierenden Ambiente der Alten Saline ausgelebt haben. Schmiede welcomes Tanzbuero: 1.000 m weiter ... das Ende der Welt

Mit einer eindrucksvollen Performance im Maschinenraum der Saline öffnete sich am 17. September das „glokale Gestennetz“ von Hüseyin Evirgen, Fanni Futterknecht, Claudia Heu, Michikazu Matsune, Amanda Pina, Tomaz Simatovic, Oleg Soulimenko, Walter Steinacher, Kamen Stoyanov für Interessierte.

Gesten, die jeder versteht, choreografiert von Walter Steinacher wurden von Lisa Peter, Judith Koncz und Aja Zupanec berührend getanzt. Dass Gesten auch anders aussehen können und doch von allen verstanden werden, zeigt Kamen Stoyanov: Er bereitet Tarator zu, eine bulgarische Joghurtsuppe. Alle BesucherInnen und KünstlerInnen sind eingeladen zum gemeinsamen Essen, Austauschen, Miteinander sein. Ein gelungener Auftakt zu einer performativen Ausstellung der neun KünstlerInnen.

50 junge Künstler und Entwickler – aus aller Welt und aus der Region - waren mit dabei, 6 Projekte, die in 24 Stunden von Freitag auf Samstag entstanden sind wurden präsentiert: Der erste Halleiner Hackathon – eine Kooperation der Schmiede mit Music & Bits - war ein Erfolg. Gernot Poetsch (NXTBGTHNG, Berlin) zieht den Vergleich mit New York: „Dort haben 350 Teilnehmer ca. 50 Projekte präsentiert. Allerdings sind üblicher Weise bei den Hackathons die EntwicklerInnen in der Überzahl. Nicht so in Hallein – hier haben mehr KünstlerInnen teilgenommen. EntwicklerInnen waren der Engpass. 50 TeilnehmerInnen und 6 Projekte sind daher eine sehr gute Quote“

Vernissage - chaos creates structure

Schmiede11 hat begonnen: mit der siebten Schnittstelle seit 2005 im kunstraum pro arte und sieben Zugängen zum Thema „Chaos creates structure“ – sie verzaubern aus den unterschiedlichsten persönlichen Blickwinkeln bis zum 8. Oktober:

„Morgen ist immer morgen“: Spielkarten, über Jahre auf der Straße gefunden und eingesammelt, werden zu einer strukturierten Wandarbeit (Lisha). „Dear Diary“, persönliche Tagebuchaufzeichnungen geben dem Chaos in einem Leben Struktur (Ellinor Ljungkvist). Fotoemulsion strukturiert auf einer Reise gefundene Steine, Muscheln und ein Selbstportrait (Klaus Mähring). Die Videoinstallation „TauToy Time Machine“ fängt optische Eindrücke aus der Galerie ein und kombiniert sie mit vorhandenem Bildmaterial (Michael Schreiber).

Heavy Smith Action @ SVS

Freunde der Natur, Freunde der Musik! SVS (Selbstversorgersound) findet dieses Jahr zum zweiten Mal in folge in der alten Steinmühle tief im oberösterreichischen Mühlviertel statt.

Aus organisatorischen Gründen muss sich jeder anmelden. Auch Teilnehmer die in der Vergangenheit schon dabei waren. - Anmeldeschluss ist der 15. August.

Alle Interessenten, die nicht aktiv Musik machen sind dazu eingeladen, am letzten Wochenende vom 9.9. bis 11.9. den Spirit einzuatmen und den entstandenen Arbeiten zu lauschen. Dafür bitte im Anmeldeformular einfach die Zeit vom 9.9. - 11.9. angeben.

Schmiede congrats Rainer Kohlberger

Austrian video artist and media designer Rainer Kohlberger was awarded with the Prize for Artistic Innovation for his audiovisual app field. In this app, the iPad’s camera reacts to light and colors in the environment and translates them in an aesthetic way in tones, sounds, and geometrical patterns. Formally speaking, Kohlberger draws on Concrete art.

Smith Jingle for Hallein

HALLEIN. Einen Jingle, der unverwechselbar an Hallein erinnert, hat TVB-Obmann Ernst Kronreif im September unter den Teilnehmern der Schmiede10 gesucht. Der für Radio- und Fernsehwerbung gedachte Audioclip sollte den „Silent Night“-Bezug der Statd hervorheben, aber auch an heißen Sommertagen Wirkung zeigen.

Das Rennen machte der Smith Matias Monteagudo aus Caracas, der seit 2007 an der Schmiede teilnimmt. 2009 ist der Komponist aus Venezuela ausgewandert, um in Salzburg zu leben und zu arbeiten. Diese Woche wurde das Werk übergeben und Matias Monteagudo mit 1.000 Euro Preisgeld aus Hallein belohnt.

"Schmiede welcomes Music & Bits" will happen on the first Schmiede11 weekend  (16th and 17th of September) and is an open festival within Schmiede. Music and Bits is an event focused on creating web applications around music and technology. From building iPhone apps to art installations and web applications - everything is allowed as long as it’s music related and build within a very limited amount of time.

On 24 June 2011 there will be a showdown of brains and fists. In the warehouse of the Tape Club in Berlin, the two oldest chessboxing clubs of the world will face off against each other.

The Chessboxing Club Berlin, founded in 2005, is considered the origin of chessboxing. The hybrid martial art was invented here, and chessboxing was taught, refined and expanded into the world from here. The London ChessBoxing Club was founded in 2008 and has quickly become the second largest club in the world.

What happens when traditional Alpine folk music and electronic music meet?

We pose this question to all who are interested in participating in the 2011 Voixtronik remix contest. Two traditional Austrian Alpine folk music sound sample packs (instrumental and vocal/yodl) are provided to
experiment with in an electronic form and to create something entirely new -namely Voixtronik.

The Voixtronik remix contest offers innovative sound researchers and composers the possibility to transfer selected traditional Alpine folk songs to the context of today's contemporary electronic music culture.

The sample packs provided are recordings by the Tennkoglmusi and the Breinlinger family, who offer a taste of their own traditional Austrian Alpine folk music.

Open Call: Dakar Arts Festival

In 2011 there is a special collaboration between Schmiede Hallein and the Dakar Arts Festival, Dakar, Senegal. All Smiths (Schmiede participants) and others interested are specially invited to participate in the first International Dakar Arts Festival.  At Schmiede11 (September 15-25th) you will have the possibility to get more information about this collaborative project. During Schmiede11 there will be a “meet the partner festival” session and an  information booth to update art enthusiasts with the current developments . Due to special collaboration with other festivals the High Ministry of Culture in Senegal is supporting exhibiting artists that participate in the Dakar Arts Festival with a 50% travel grant.

Frägt man ANGELA AUX nach einem möglichen Leitmotiv auf „Whatever you guess it’s not“, so handelt es „vom verloren Sein in Wäldern aus Zeichen, von kompostmodernen Verirrungen und Wirrungen, von überreizenden Angeboten und ständigem Nachfragen“.
Einem Artisten gleich jongliert er über Albumlänge mit bunten Sträußen aus Instrumenten, Geräuschen, Genres und Assoziationen: mal folkig, mal beatlastig, mal verschwurbelt oder experimentell. Adventure Games, Politik und die Zukunft der Vergangenheit Das Projekt "Sowjet-Unterzögersdorf" starte vor zehn Jahren als Versuch der Implantierung einer "falscher Erinnerung" in das europäische Kulturgedächtnis. Und das hat recht gut geklappt. Ein fiktives kleines Land wurde geschaffen, die letzte Teilrepublik der UdSSR, und als LARP-Performance und öffentliche Interventionen inszeniert. Danach wurde das Konze...pt in ein Computer-Adventure-Game verwandelt, um die Kunde auch in die globale Mediensphäre zu tragen. Die postmodernen Debatte um Geschichte (und Geschichten) ist ein zentrales Element der Analyse und Kritik von nationaler und ethnischer Identität. Smith Action: Madrid: Teatro Real

Filling „La Página en Blanco“ (the white page) with a world of obscure images, Claudia Rohrmoser and Benjamin Hohnheiser created an animated video scenography for the opera „La Página en Blanco“. In cooperation with stage director David Hermann and scenographer and sculptor Alexander Polzin, they are responsible for about 25mins in three video passages for the contemporary production of composer Pilar Jurado. A self developed live playback interface enables an outstanding, vital interplay between orchestra, stage artists, scenography and video elements. With projection support of Jakob Guggenberger, the experienced crew from Cinema Vertigo Lab (Schmiede10) is complete.

Die interaktive Videowall „Cinema Vertigo“ gewann 2008 den neuen Landeskulturpreis „Podium“. In den Hallen der Schmiede wurde das Projekt zu diesem Anlass auch erstmals in Szene gesetzt. 2010 zählte die Medienfassade zu den fix installierten SchmiedeProduktionen und stand den Teilnehmern zur Verfügung, um bespielt zu werden. Die Smiths konnten hier unter Betreuung von Claudia Rohrmoser und Benjamin Hohnheiser ihre Videos, Visuals, Animationen, Sound und Spiele veröffentlichen oder Cinema Vertigo als Hintergrund/Bestandteil ihrer Projekte verwenden.

Smith10 Interview

Die Schnittstelle ist fixer Bestandteil der Schmiede. Sie eröffnet diese nicht nur seit vier Jahren, sondern dient auch als Brücke von den teilnehmenden Künstlern zum beobachtenden Publikum. Anfangs in der Schmiede selbst untergebracht, findet sie seit einigen Jahren in der Galerie Pro Arte statt. Seit 2009 zieht sie sogar weiter und ist nach der Schmiede auch in einer Berliner Galerie zu sehen. Unter dem Titel „Duprass“ wurden heuer die gemeinsamen Arbeiten von jeweils zwei Künstlern gezeigt. Zu diesem Namen ließ sich Kurator Marcel Schobel vom Autor Kurt Vonnegut und seinem Buch „Cat´s Cradle“ inspirieren.

Aktuell produzieren wir alle zwei Tage so viel Information wie wir vom Beginn unserer Zivilisation bis 2003 produziert haben, ca. fünf Exabytes (Eric Fischer, CEO Google). Vergleichbar mit der Informationsarchitekur des Hirns und der eines Computers hat das Netzwerk einer Stadt Knotenpunkte, Verbindungen und Beziehungen. In der Stadt bewegen sich Personen und Gruppen von Personen, die ihre Funktion und Zusammensetzung nach Bedürfnis oder Notwendigkeit verändern. Güter werden erdacht, entwickelt, transportiert, konsumiert, ausgetauscht und neu zusammengesetzt. Dieser Ausstausch läuft durch die Infrastruktur der Stadt und diesem Prozess sind Zusatzinformationen wie persönliche Daten, Interaktionen, Telekommunikation und die visuellen Eindrücke der Umgebung beigemischt. Da es offensichtlich kosteneffizienter ist Information, anstatt Menschen oder Dinge zu bewegen, tun sich hier viele Fragen auf.

Smith Jingle for Hallein

HALLEIN. Einen Jingle, der unverwechselbar an Hallein erinnert, hat TVB-Obmann Ernst Kronreif im September unter den Teilnehmern der Schmiede10 gesucht. Der für Radio- und Fernsehwerbung gedachte Audioclip sollte den „Silent Night“-Bezug der Statd hervorheben, aber auch an heißen Sommertagen Wirkung zeigen.

Das Rennen machte der Smith Matias Monteagudo aus Caracas, der seit 2007 an der Schmiede teilnimmt. 2009 ist der Komponist aus Venezuela ausgewandert, um in Salzburg zu leben und zu arbeiten. Diese Woche wurde das Werk übergeben und Matias Monteagudo mit 1.000 Euro Preisgeld aus Hallein belohnt.

Die Pressekonferenz ist abgesagt.

Processing ist eine Open Source Programmiersprache zum Erstellen von Computer-Grafiken und interaktiven Animationen. Die Sprache wurde ursprünglich dafür entwickelt, um einen Einstieg ins Programmieren in einem visuellen Kontext zu vermitteln. Inzwischen wird Processing aber von Künstlern, Designern, Studenten, Forschern und Entwicklern gleichermaßen zum Lernen, Prototyping und zur professionellen Produktion eingesetzt.

Am 4.12.2010 von 18:00-21:00 Uhr gibt es im subnet-Büro (ARGE) einen Einführungsworkshop in Processing mit Marius Schebella. Der Workshop ist für alle geeignet, die die Möglichkeiten von Processing kennen lernen wollen und in den Umgang und die wichtigsten Konzepte dahinter hineinschnuppern wollen.
Mitzubringen sind nach Möglichkeit ein eigener Laptop mit einer aktuellen Version von Processing darauf.

Dieses Processing Workshop ist offen für Teilnehmer: 5-10.

Der Auftakt ist das Eröffnungsfest des neuen Kulturortes "Die Bäckerei".
Durch das einwöchige Programm mit Diskussionen, Vorträgen, Performances und Konzerten unterschiedlicher AkteurInnen aus der nationalen und internationalen Szene versucht columbosnext dem Thema Konkreter Utopien in einer polydisziplinären Auseinandersetzung näher zu kommen. Unter anderem werden 20 KünstlerInnen und ArchitektInnen eine von columbosnext gebaute Installation aus 73 Leinwänden vor Ort gestalten und den Versuch antreten, eine konkrete Utopie zu realisieren. Zum Abschluss der Projektwoche wird das diesjährige Theater Trifft Festival eröffnet.

„Daten sind wunderschön“, sagen die fünf Jungs der Designagentur „Your Neighbours“. In erster Linie geht es Ihnen darum, Daten aufzubereiten und zugänglicher für alle zu machen. Rund um diesen Anspruch gestalten sie Websites, erstellen Infographics und hacken sich auch schon mal in die Datenbank der einen oder anderen Regierung ein. Für einen guten Zweck, versteht sich! Eines ihrer größten Projekte ist der „Music Hackday“, im Moment arbeiten sie an einer Plattform, die allen helfen soll und ganz nebenbei konzipieren sie an einem Buch, das, wenn es nach ihnen geht, demnächst im Taschenverlag publiziert werden soll. Mit der Kunst als Mittel zum Zweck beschäftigen sich Devid Mrusek und sein „Zentrum für politische Schönheit“. Marco Wedel denkt darüber nach, was einen Künstler zu einem Künstler macht und überlegt, wie sich Künstler in die Gesellschaft einbinden können. Außerdem analysiert der Politologe und Musiker, wie viel Egozentrik einem Künstler gut tut und wann ein Werk nur mehr dem Selbstverständnis des Künstlers dient. In seinem eigenen künstlerischen Schaffen versucht er, politisch tätig zu sein. Was beide Protagonisten gemeinsam haben, ist, dass sie Diskussionskultur schaffen und die Leute zum Denken anregen wollen.

Die österreichische Tageszeitung „Die Presse“ hat eine 52-teilige Serie mit dem Titel „Freiraum“ gestaltet. Jeden Sonntag widmet sich eine ganze Seite diesem Thema. Jede Woche kann ein Kreativer/ein Kollektiv diesen Freiraum gestalten.
Wir haben zur Schmiede10 dahingehend eine Kooperation mit der „Presse“, dass wir einen „Freiraum“ im Rahmen der Schmiede10 ausschreiben.
Wir bitten also um zahlreiche Vorschläge/Entwürfe und einer davon wird auf jeden Fall in der „Presse“ abgedruckt werden.

Richtlinien:

Gewünscht ist eine „gesellschaftspolitisch und im Zusammenhang mit der Kreativwirtschaft relevante Aussage, die mit optischen Mitteln (Foto, Illustration, Collage, Grafik, etc.) veranschaulicht wird – sozusagen ein visueller Kommentar. Having checked the Schmiede site,  Jay Cousins saw a contingent going from Berlin,  so: why not get started early?

Smiths of Berlin consider yourself invited to Open Design City
ODC crew come and meet even more cool people than you already know.

Evening will begin with a few spontaneous informal presentations, and then swiftly slip into a freestyle get together. We’ll set up a projector so people can show movies and footage, but powerpoint is outlawed and everyone gets 5 minutes max, with opportunity for more later if the mood takes us.

Karin Fisslthaler and Richard Eigner will present the findings of the sonorous expedition around Lentos Art Museum in form of several sound installations.



German description:
Karin Fisslthaler und Richard Eigner unternahmen im Juli 2010 eine
ausgedehnte Expedition durch die gesamte Architektur des Hauses. Erforscht
wurde sprichwörtlich alles vom Dach bis zum Keller: Der Außenraum, die
Zwischendecke, die Depots, die Büros, die Ausstellungsräume, die Küche,
die Werkstätten, sämtliche Verbindungsgänge, die Klimazentrale usw. waren
Orte des gespannten Hinhörens. In weiterer Folge entstanden unzählige
Aufnahmen, die als Basis für die künstlerische Arbeit dienten.

Die beiden KünstlerInnen verbrachten die Wochen nach dem Recording damit,
das Gehörte zu analysieren ...

New York, 15. Juni 2010. - Serbien in der zeitgenössischen Kunst steht ab kommenden Herbst im Mittelpunkt einer neuen Ausstellung des Österreichischen Kulturforums New York. Die Ausstellung mit dem durchaus provozierenden Titel „FAQ Serbia“ spielt auf die vielen Fragen, Ungewissheiten, aber auch positive Erwartungen an, die Europa und die Welt an das heutige Serbien stellen. Die Ausstellung wird von dem bekannten Belgrader Kunsthistoriker und Kurator Branislav Dimitrijević gemeinsam mit Kulturforums-Direktor Andreas Stadler kuratiert und vom 21. September 2010 bis zum 9. Jänner 2011 in der Galerie des Kulturforums in Midtown Manhattan gezeigt.

Schmiede Call for participation - drama&stern

drama&stern is looking for performers

Last year on schmiede, we finished our track Wueste; on this year's Schmiede we are going to shoot a 9-minute one-shot-video. We are going to walk through Schmiede playing Wueste; on this walk, we want to run into people, intaract or let them act, and move on.
For this we are looking for *performances will last between 2 sec and 20 sec*. And please, they don't have to be serious ;)))))) *Do the monkey, yes! *
Most probably we will be shooting on Sunday Sept. 19th; till then we will prepare, find our path through Schmiede and coordinate the participation. Even though this is a video from drama&stern, we want to pay our respects and show a lot of Schmiede-flair!

Wegen der hohen Arbeitslosigkeit und des großen Migrationsanteils innerhalb der Bevölkerung der Stadt Hallein macht God's Entertainment Egalität zum Thema. Ausgehend von Fragen der Illegalität wird eine performative Erforschung lokaler Strukturen erprobt. Wann entsteht politisch illegaler Raum? Wann wird ein Körper unter der Gesetzeslupe als illegal angesehen und/oder im Rahmen gesellschaftlicher Gewohnheiten als fremd bewertet? Wann führen Körper und Raum zur Ausweisung oder Ausgrenzung? Smith Action: loneliness - Berlin - 5. Aug

“Isn’t it conceivable that some people do suffer from a soul-driven substance that brings about their downfall?” – these words by Honoré de Balzac built the fundament of a poetry based video art series about human isolation and loneliness.

„Gehen nicht vielleicht viele Menschen daran zugrunde, dass eine seelische Substanz ihr Inneres zersetzt?“ – Balzac

„Versuche über die Einsamkeit“ ist ein als Trilogie angelegtes Videokunstprojekt in dem die Einsamkeit des Einzelnen filmisch umgesetzt wird. Jedes Fragment basier...t auf lyrischen Originaldokumenten deren Motive den dramaturgischen Kontext für die Inszenierung bilden. Ein in allen Teilen wiederkehrendes Element ist schwarze Flüssigkeit (seelische Substanz) als Symbol unerklärbarer, autoaggressiver Emotionalität.

Smith Action - IEPE - Berlin - Fr. July 9th

Die Farbperformance 'Painting Reality' war bis jetzt anonym. Aber jetzt wisst ihr bescheid!

English: Yes it was IEPE. Come and check out 'Painting Reality' movie premiere @ Kreuzberg Biennale!

Die Lesung besteht aus einem Kapitel aus dem neuen Buch vom Author Helmut Kuhn, in dem ein Schachboxer Hauptprotagonist ist. Im Kapitel verfolgt der Protagonist die Farbaktion Painting Reality am Rosenthalerplatz. Beide Arbeiten sind vom Künstler IEPE. Der Künstler wird die Zusammenhänge an Hand der Ausschnitte weiter erläutern.

Nach der Lesung findet die Premiere vom Film Painting Reality statt. Der Film ist vom Regisseur Achim Bornhak (u.a. Das wilde Leben) und IEPE produziert worden. Zusätzlich wird die Dokumentation vom allerersten Schachboxkampf der Geschichte in Amsterdam aus 2003 gezeigt.

Eine tierisch gute FM4 Soundpark Studio2 Session haben uns gestern abend die beiden Elektro-Formationen Ogris Debris und Ritornell beschert.
Nach der letzten FM4 Soundpark Studio2 Session haben wir den armen TechnikerInnen im Studio2 des Wiener Funkhauses hoch und heilig versprochen, dass beim nächsten Mal Bands aufspielen werden, die nicht so viel technischen Aufwand benötigen werden. Also haben wir auf zwei Elektronik-Duos gesetzt, die wohl nicht mehr als ein Mikrofon und zwei Laptops mitbringen würden - so unsere Überlegung. Falsch gedacht. more... Cinema Vertigo can be adjusted to any architectural space that includes more than one floor. It is able to track movement and the interactive system furthermore can be attached to any other moving element in the room. In April 2009 we presented the prototype of Cinema Vertigo with its first "movie" „In Freefall“ .

Schmiede10: DISCONTENT - What's new?

Schmiede has always been about projects. Starting 2010 we will put more focus onto the continuity of a few outstanding projects and Smiths. Therefore, few large Senior Smith Projects will be integrated into the Schmiede10 process. They are experimental platforms designed to confront with new challenges and potentially produce more than a single Smith could. A large part of Schmiede10 will be devoted to these projects.

Every applicant has the possibility to voice his/her interest to working on one by specifically applying to the Senior Smith Projects . Only a limited number of Smith can work on these projects. Involvment in a Senior Smith Project is optional. There is an extra section at the end of the Schmiede10 application, for the interested.

 is a prosumer festival, a place where our ideas come to play.

Since 2003, Schmiede provides space, time, tools, a heterogeneous group of participants and projects. For ten days in September, the Saline in Hallein, Austria, becomes an open and free playground (2000m2) for 140 creatives and artists from all around the world. Depending on the needs and possibilities of its members the SmithNetwork moves along the borders of art, culture, handcraft and creative industry. Schmiede ends with FocusOnInside, a grand public exhibition, where the Smith productions of the past ten days are presented to the public and media.

Angesichts von Kampagnenjournalismus, der Boulevardisierung und zunehmender Gleichschaltung bleiben „Do-It-Yourself-Medien“ Eckpfeiler demokratischer Medienkultur. Während der öffentlichrechtliche Rundfunk ständig an Qualität verliert, und kommerzieller Rundfunk als „Einweg-Medium“ in zunehmender Konkurrenz zum Internet steht, boomen europaweit „Freie & Community Medien“.

Auch in Österreich geschieht dies zunehmend: 13 Freie Radios, ein Community TV in Wien und ein Community TV in Gründung in Linz stellen der Bevölkerung erfolgreich Plattformen für Vielfalt, Kreativität, freie Meinungsäusserung und Experimente zur Verfügung. Und spielen eine wachsende Rolle für gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt, Meinungsbildung und Medienkompetenz. Eine Aufgabe, die sowohl von der Europäischen Kommission, vom Europäischen Parlament, als auch von UNESCO und der OSZE unterstützt und eingefordert wird.

For all Smith09 the beatbattle  should be a known concept, for everyone else: 

beatbattle is an open audio producer competition. anybody may participate. its purpose: to bring audio producers together and aggregate fresh productions. for a competition to work we need to be able to compare productions on a fair playing field. as there are so many styles etc.. we decided to work with a few rules and resource limitations. a zip.file with break and sample can be downloaded at the beginning of each beatbattle. participants shall produce a track solely with the material given and upload it by the deadline.

In der multimedialen Installation „Sarugaku“ beschäftigen sich die Künstler Blasius, Fischer, Rohrmoser und Schobel
mit dem Werk und der Identität eines Kunstschaffenden, der nach einer kurzen, aber intensiven Schaffensperiode aus
der Öffentlichkeit verschwand. Die beteiligten Künstler treten in diesem Fall als Archivare und Kommentatoren auf.
Skulpturen, Skizzen und Filme bilden einen Raum, in dem eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Verschwinden dieser
Person statt findet. In einer transmedialen Erzählkonstruktion entfaltet sich eine Geschichte, die Spuren zum Verbleib

This interactive media art environment is dealing with the function, use and perception of public space. It alludes to nowadays optionality of public space functions within an experiment of media technology.

Cubes, placed in passage zones like train stations or pedestrian underpasses are the interface between passenger and projection and invites them to play with. He is prompted to interact with them and to cause interaction between the objects.

"publicubes: in transit"  (formerly named “Durchgangszone”) is one of the eight selected projects from Salzburg Land‘s cultural funding “Podium´09 – Kunst der neuen Generation” and will be presented in the beginning of november within the Podium’09 event series in Salzburg Lokalbahnhof (Main Station).

Ogris Debris sind aus Wien und sitzen auf einer Schaukel.
Diese Schaukel nennen sie "Sexy Chair". Damit pendeln sie zwischen Techno und House hin und her, in full swing, sozusagen.
Aber wer Ogris Debris live erlebt, erfährt am eigenen Tanzbein dass sie das Publikum keineswegs verschaukeln wollen. Auch wenn es manchmal den Anschein haben mag. Doch hinter all dem Kasperltheater steckt ernsthafte Begeisterung für den speziellen Funk in der Musik mit der "geraden" Bassdrum.

Nach "G-Thong" und "Hide Open" ist der zweite Release auf "Compost Blacklabel" bereits in der Pipeline, schon auf CD gepresst und zum (Gern-)Haben gibts den Beitrag von Ogris Debris ...

DER GREIF is working on the layout of the Schmiede Spezial Poster Mag. Everybody is still invited to send photos. Some of you already wanted to do so, but didn't send them yet, please see this post as a reminder.

We also need lyrics, poems, texts that were made throughout the schmiede or used for work there. Especially songlyrics would be great, because we want to visualize the music part of the schmiede typograhically on one of the three posters. This would be great!

So it's not coincidence that Swaan's debut single release called "Fucking Day" is exactly the kind of demolition charge one would expect from a cutting edge French Nu Disco tune. Additionaly this wonderful release about an awful day was completed by the most archaic and brutal musical "renarration" one could imagine ...

DEPART: call for participants

dear fellow smiths,


we (depart + stefan fraunberger) have organized a special performance in an
interesting space together with this year's schmiede:

it is called "chukwa's approach" and takes place on a salt lake inside a
mountain near hallein. it is basically a drone based on just intonation and
prime numbered overtones, inspired by the works of la monte young, a
pioneer of this kind of music in the last century.
of course, just intonation or also the so called pythagorean tuning have
been around for much longer, but that's a whole different story.

as it happens we are still looking for people with a mind for performance
and music, who want to participate in this special concert. what we need is
